Prepositional Phrases


A prepositional phrases is a preposition and the noun following it. The preposition is in the head position and the noun is in the complement position. Please note that prepositions are words such as in, from, to, etc. Used before a noun or a pronoun to show a place, a position, time or a method.
Here are other examples of prepositional phrases
·       That man is from Thailand
·       We will discuss the matter after breakfast
·       She put the book  on the table
Recognize a prepositional phrases when you see one
At the minimum, a prepositional phrases will begin with a preposition and end with a noun, pronoun, gerund or clause the “object ” of the preposition.
These are the patterns for a prepositional phrapase:

  • preposition + noun, pronoun, gerund, or clause
  • preposition + modifier (s) + noun, pronoun, gerund or clause.


A prepositional pharase will function as an adjective or adverb.
As an adjechve the prepositional pharase will answer the
question which one ?
Read these examples :
1). The book on the bathroom floor is swoilen from shower steam.
Which book ? The one en the bathroom floor !
2). The note frombeverli confassed that she had eaten the lefttver pizza.
Which note ? The one from Beverly.

As an adverb, a prepositional phrase will answer question such as how? when? or where?
  1. Freddy is stiff from yesterday's long football pratice. How did Freddy get stiff? From yesterday's long football practice.
  2. Befora class, Josh begged his friends for a pencil. When did Josh do this begging ? Before class .
  3. Feeling brave we tired the Dragon Breath Burritos at Titi's Taco Palace. Where did we eat the spicy food ? At Tito's Taco Palace.
